Overview

Unit description, learning objectives, and skills.

Unit 0 — Foundations is the launchpad for all of Algebra 1. Before solving equations or graphing lines, you need a solid command of the building blocks: variables, expressions, the order of operations, real number classification, properties of operations, exponent rules, and scientific notation. Work through every lesson in order — each one builds on the last.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

Goal 1Define and use variables to write and evaluate algebraic expressions
Goal 2Apply the order of operations (PEMDAS/GEMDAS) to evaluate expressions correctly
Goal 3Classify real numbers and place them accurately on a number line
Goal 4Identify and apply properties of operations (commutative, associative, distributive)
Goal 5Evaluate expressions with integer exponents using all exponent rules
Goal 6Write numbers in scientific notation and perform multiplication and division

Skills You Will Master

Variables & expressions
Order of operations
Real number classification
Properties of operations
Exponent rules
Scientific notation

Real-World Connection

Every skill in this unit is a tool you will use throughout Algebra 1 and beyond. Order of operations prevents calculation errors in science labs. Scientific notation is how astronomers describe distances between stars and how chemists measure atoms. Properties of operations are the rules that make mental math fast. Mastering these foundations now means every future unit will feel manageable instead of overwhelming.
